A Golden Age Reborn: The New Great Dunes Course on Jekyll Island

by Arden Jones

For years, golfers visiting Jekyll Island had a bit of a "secret" in the original nine hole Great Dunes course. It was a rugged, historic stretch of land designed by the legendary Walter Travis back in 1926. But as of late 2025, that secret is out in a big way.

At Monarch & Third, we love seeing our coastal neighbors thrive. The grand reopening of the Great Dunes Course as a full 18 hole experience is the talk of the Golden Isles this year. Whether you are a scratch golfer or just like a scenic walk with a club in your hand, this is a major win for the island.

From 9 Holes to an 18 Hole Masterpiece

For decades, Great Dunes was just a nine hole remnant of a larger vision. Now, thanks to a massive restoration project led by architects Brian Ross and Jeff Stein, it has been expanded into a complete 18 hole par 72 course.

The design team didn't just add new holes; they went back to the archives. They used historical photos to restore the original Travis spirit, blending the old seaside holes with new ones inspired by the "Golden Age" of golf architecture. The result is a course that feels like it has been there since the Rockefellers roamed the island.

Why Locals Are Excited

This isn't just another golf course. It represents a massive commitment to the island's history and its environment.

  • Eco Friendly Innovation: Great Dunes is the first course in Georgia to use a brackish water irrigation system. This drastically reduces the need for fresh water and chemicals, keeping the island’s ecosystem healthy.
  • Maritime Forest Views: The routing takes you through stunning maritime forests, over coastal dunes, and right alongside the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Conservation First: As part of the project, over 50 acres of land from the former Oleander course were returned to nature, creating a protected wildlife corridor for the island’s birds and animals.

The Experience

The course is designed to be "links style," meaning it is open, sandy, and influenced by the coastal wind. It is challenging but approachable, offering five sets of tees so everyone can enjoy the views. It officially opened to the public on November 1, 2025, and it has already become a must play destination for 2026.

Fun Fact: The 3rd hole is already becoming a local favorite. This par 3’s green is inspired by the famous 12th hole at Garden City Country Club in New York and is surrounded by dramatic sand features that make for a perfect photo op.
